I get up early for me, pack my stuff, eat, and get away by 7:30. Pretty soon the Desert View Watchtower comes into view. When you look back at the top of the Tanner Trail, you realize how steep and nearly vertical that section of the trail is. I do the big loop by Cardenas Butte and soon pass close to Escalante Butte.
Just above Stegosaurus Rock, I meet a group of three headed to Tanner Rapids, Palisades Creek, and then going west on the Escalante Route. This is their first time on those trails, so I give them some hints and suggestions. They report later that they were fortunate enough to hitch a raft ride past the Papago Wall and Slide. When you see the rock formation on the far right picture below, you know you are nearly to the top.
All the snow on the trail from yesterday is gone. A couple more turns of the trail and I reach the trailhead sign. I throw my stuff in the car and head to the Maswik for lunch. MAIN INDEX | HIKING INDEX | BACK TO DAY 1 | FORWARD TO POSTSCRIPT
