Today is Dean’s birthday!  I present him with a set of pajamas that I sewed at home and stowed in the car.  He really likes them.

Our plan today is to visit The General Sherman Tree, the largest tree in the world, super early in the morning.  When we first entered the park, we drove by it and there were hundreds of cars, the parking lot was overflowing, and people were everywhere.  It’s amazing that just by arriving at 6 am, there is not a soul around, and it stays that way for the full 90 minutes of our visit.

This was another magical experience on this trip.  The entire grove is so incredible as was visiting the General Grant Tree.  We walk around the surrounding trail network for a good while.  I loved it.

We head back to the lodge for breakfast and get organized for our next two night hike on the Redwood Canyon Loop.  We head over to the trailhead and start our hike around 11 am.

We’re only going a few miles today, starting on the western side of the loop and walking clockwise to the Hart Tree.  Just as well we don’t have a lot of distance to cover since our pace is slow.  We frequently turn our faces upwards and linger under the massive trees.

We pass an old, fallen sequoia that was once used as a cabin.  We have seen in a few places how these fallen trees resist decay and were used as makeshift shelters in the past.  This one has a little fireplace.

We arrive at the crossing of East Fork Redwood Creek just near the Hart Tree and set up our camp there under the giant sequoias.  That was Dean’s specific wish for his birthday.  Then we take a very short stroll to visit the Hart Tree and sit together at the base of it for some time.
