ALL HIKERS

PREFACE

I am getting ready to do the Salt Trail, so I am going to arrive at the Canyon a few days early for acclimation and some short warm-up hikes.  Richard Erbe is joining me on the Salt Trail hike.  He is doing the tough North Bass Trail a week or so before our Salt Trail hike.  After he has rested up from that hike for a few days, we agree to go from Sowats Point to Racetrack Knoll.  I have attempted that three times before, but have been thwarted every time.  On my first attempt, a huge thunderstorm unleashed a mini flash flood in a slot canyon I was in, taking away my tent and some gear (trip report here).  I was lucky it did not take me away.

Our plan is to leave from Sowats Point, descend to the cottonwood trees at the head of Kwagunt Hollow, make our way around to the south generally on the 4,400' contour line until reaching upper Indian Hollow, and make camp there for two nights.  The next day we will try to exit Indian Hollow on a drainage leading to the Esplanade, make our way over to Racetrack Knoll, climb to the top of it, and return to camp.  We then plan to spend night three at the cottonwood trees, exiting on the fourth day.
