DAY 3: UPPER INDIAN HOLLOW TO SOWATS POINT

Richard and I are in no hurry to get around this morning since we're only going back over to the cottonwood trees for the night.  We walk up Indian Hollow, only to find an impasse point.  Hmm, how did we get down here day before yesterday.  Both of us seem to have forgotten our exact route in.  We finally go down Indian Hollow a short distance to a point where we can climb up on the ledge above.  We are then able to walk up canyon to the entry-exit point we used the other day.

Once out of Indian Hollow, we're back in familiar settings.  We angle over and around this one point, trying to stay on the 4,400' elevation contour line.  Racetrack Knoll can be seen far in the distance.  It's hard to believe we were on the very top of that yesterday.

After rounding the point, we pick up the established trail, which makes the going a little easier.

We stop briefly to explore this small cave we passed the other day.  It is completely empty.

In no time at all, we are approaching the notch in the hill that leads down to Kwagunt Hollow and the creek.  A break is in order upon reaching the cottonwood trees.  Then we go down to the creek to filter water.  As we are talking, dark clouds roll in and there is a lot of thunder the just to the south of us.  The weatherman said it was supposed to be severe clear our whole time here.

Richard and I make a snap decision to not spend the night here and go on out right now.  I did not bring a rain jacket, so hopefully we can get out soon enough to avoid getting wet and having to drive on muddy roads.  It starts sprinkling on us about half-way to the top, but appears to be raining much harder down on the rocks around Kwagunt Hollow.

Then it's back to Jacob Lake to camp across the street in the campground and have a nice meal at the Jacob Lake Inn.
