As I'm eating my cold oatmeal for breakfast, I notice that Mike is having hot pancakes and bacon. It's probably just an oversight on his part not to offer me some of his scrumptious food. There's a reason I like to sleep in a tent. While packing I find a friend under my tent ground cloth. We finish packing and head up Sowats Canyon for our move to Lower Jumpup Spring. Although the route down Sowats and then up Jumpup would be shorter, that would also require us to negotiate the Ladder and Ledges again. No one seems enthusiastic about that, so we take the longer but safer route.
At the cairns, we start up the north side trail to the top and pass the "Homer Simpson" rock.
The ladies are apparently feeling rambunctious again and once more challenge us to a game of King of the Hill. There are very nice views in all directions from the top.
After a short break, we start across the Esplanade for Jumpup Canyon.
Upon reaching Jumpup, we go down canyon about a half-mile until we reach Lower Jumpup Spring where we find one campsite on the west side of the creek bed. After a little cleanup and limb moving, there is enough room for three of our tents. The others lay out their sleeping gear on the gravel creek bed.
After a nap, I go down canyon a little ways to filter water. The other half of the Adventure Leadership Class we saw in Indian Hollow comes down for some water also. They are camped up canyon at the cottonwood trees. My plan for tomorrow is to get up early and leave around sunup. That way I will beat the heat and won't slow the others down due to my slow uphill hiking speed. MAIN INDEX | HIKING INDEX | BACK TO DAY 5 | FORWARD TO DAY 7
