I am up at 5:30, pack my gear, and skip breakfast. I say goodbye to Keith and Bob and head up the trail at 6:15. My plan is to do the steep uphill switchbacks while it's still cool. In just over an hour, I reach the top of the switchbacks. That's a relief. It's nice to be looking down on the cottonwood trees. I make my way around on the mostly level trail and notice a gold-like deposit on the side of the rocks. Maybe I should file a mining claim. There aren't many blooming flowers this time of year.
Pretty soon I come to the Forest Service sign, so the top can't be too far. You know you're there when you reach the trail register and trailhead sign. I load my stuff in the car and I'm off.
One more hour and I'm at the Jacob Lake Inn having breakfast. I then start the long drive back to Oklahoma. MAIN INDEX | HIKING INDEX | BACK TO DAY 3 | FORWARD TO POSTSCRIPT
