This was a
good hike. It really complemented my hike last week to Cape
Solitude. Our trip highlights were:
-
The Desert View
Watchtower from down in the Canyon.
-
Our great Redwall
campsite and the wonderful views of the river from there.
-
Our fantastic campsite
at Palisades Creek by Lava Canyon Rapids.
-
The confluence of the
Colorado River and the Little Colorado River.
-
Ben Beamer's cabin.
-
Seth Tanner's mine at
Palisades Creek.
If you are doing this hike, I have the following recommendations:
-
It is a long ways from
the Tanner trailhead to Tanner Rapids. Camping at the Redwall really
breaks up this long trail into two manageable parts.
-
My map maker rates the
Beamer Trail as "Easy" from Tanner Rapids to Palisades Creek, but I
would rate it as "Medium."
-
It is a long 6.75 miles
from Palisades Creek to Ben Beamer's cabin at the confluence. There is
one area with some minor exposure and there are numerous drainages to traverse.
-
Historical sites like
Ben Beamer's cabin and Seth Tanner's mine are for viewing only. Please do not disturb these
sites.
-
I completely forgot to
use my
foot anti-perspirant
trick before this hike. Consequently, I had wet feet every day.
That probably contributed to my heels being sore and red. If you use
this trick, your feet will be amazingly dry during your hikes.
-
Mice are always a
threat to attack your food in the inner Canyon as I found out when I
inadvertently left some nuts and candy in my pack overnight at Palisades
Creek. I am embarrassed to say this is the third time I have
accidentally done that and all three times resulted in holes in my pack. I brought a
Ratsack Cache
bag, a mesh, stainless steel bag, which comes in three sizes.
Another bag that is popular is the
Ursack. I prefer the
Ratsack because it is larger, cheaper, and has a superior Velcro closure system.
If you keep your food in your Ratsack, it is impervious to attack by rodents, ravens,
and squirrels.
I'm looking forward to doing a South Bass-Tonto-Boucher hike next spring.
